TFI Friday #10

Welcome to the return of our weekly updates. This week I have a few tasty treats for you folks that'll hopefully brighten up your weekend in this frankly astonishingly bad weather. I'm usually Mr. Cold when it comes to weather but even I have to admit that this is beginning to take the piss. Where I live, it has been snowing non-stop for a good two weeks now and it doesn't look like its going to stop any time soon. I haven't seen anything like this, well, ever really. Could this be the result of global warming? I've no idea. Aren't we supposed to be overdue an ice age by a couple of hundred/thousand years? Again, who knows, I just hope it goes away sometime soon. Either way, make the most of your weekend and enjoy the tracks.

The Proxy - Think First
Filthy Rich - Make You Freq (Miles Dyson Remix)
Digitalism - Taken Away (Disco Trash Music Remix)
Laidback Luke - Need Your Loving (Felix Cartal Remix)
Kylie Minogue - Wow (MSTRKRFT Remix)

TFI Friday #9

Another week over, another TFI Friday post in circulation. I don't know about you guys but I have relatively few plans for tonight. There are two reasons for this: UFC 107 is on tomorrow night and Soulwaxmas is next week, so I'm taking it easy, saving some money and preparing myself for the onslaught that is inevitably going to come. Hopefully any of you who are reading this have better plans for tonight. Either way, whether you do or you don't, here are some dirty tracks to pump you up or ease the burden depending on what you have planned.

OldSchoolReunion - Bring Me The Acapella
AC Slater - Jack Got Jacked (Jack Beats Remix)
GRUM - Go Back
Digitalism - Home Zone (The Proxy Remix)
The Body Snatchers - Call Me (Blende Remix)

Tiga

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Tiga is a name that evokes a simultaneous sense of fear and anticipation whenever it is uttered. Having been DJing since the early 90s, Tiga has created a fierce reputation on the live circuit. He is responsible for the promotion of countless rave parties in Montreal and for the formation of the world renowned club SONA. In spite of these accomplishments, he was still uncontent and eventually he opened a record store entitled DNA Records and later created his own record label, Turbo Records.

Even these humble beginnings provided the blueprint for success on a much larger scale, because to some extent they demonstrated exactly what he was capable of. There is little doubt that, like a certain 00 Agent, Tiga is a man whose main priority is to get the job done. While his own solo material didn't exactly set the world on fire, he really shone through on his remixes and covers. The former has led to many faithful reinterpretations from artists ranging from Felix Da Housecat to Scissor Sisters. His cover of Corey Hart's Sunglasses At Night also often sneaks its way onto sets by many world-class DJs. Another notable cover is his body-popping cover of Public Enemy's Louder Than A Bomb, arguably the best of his solo work.

The songs I'm going to focus on today are Move My Body (Boys Noize Remix), You Gonna Want Me (Tocadisco Remix) and What You Need (The Proxy Remix). Move My Body is a fairly old remix but one of Alex Ridha's better ones. It has been making the rounds for several years now and never fails to get the dancefloor bouncing. Both You Gonna Want Me and What You Need, however, are my tied favourites in this department because they're both infectious and really showcase their respective artists' abilities. Tocadisco really lets it rip on You Gonna Want Me, adding a beat which is arguably on the verge of electro-house which is complimented by those catchy vocals from the original. It is just one of those rare tracks that can bring a smile to your face amidst the chaos of a dance set. On the other hand, The Proxy does what he does best on What You Need providing an absolutely filthy but very Proxy-esque bassline that drops like a ton of bricks on your head. Highly recommended.

Tiga - Move My Body (Boys Noize Remix)
Tiga - You Gonna Want Me (Tocadisco Remix)
Tiga - What You Need (The Proxy Remix)

Bonus:
Tiga - Mind Dimension (Gingy Edit)

TFI Friday #5

I don't know what it is about today but I have a really good feeling about it. I was woken up reasonably early this morning with the sun completely blasting me through my windows. Considering it is November, to say it was a much needed climate surprise would be the understatement of the century, especially considering that the United Kingdom is supposed to be getting hit with one of the worst storms of the year.

To make matters infinitely better, I am around 80% sure we're doing a RoboCop marathon tonight which may not sound like much but for some reason I'm looking forward to it perhaps more than I should be. After watching the frankly disappointing and unrealistic love drama/comedy Adventureland last night, I need some vigilante justice enforced with extreme prejudice to balance myself out. Enjoy the tracks.

Felix Cartal - Montreal Dreams
Crookers - Big Money Comin'
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)
Les Petits Pilous - Wake Up
The Proxy - Dance In The Dark

The Essential Selection # 2

Has it been a month already? Well, it seems it has, which means its time for another essential selection.
Last month The Last JUNKER took the reigns, this month its my turn and for some of you this will be a trip down memory lane (as pretty much every essential selection will or should). If you haven't heard of these tracks, didn't know their names or simply forgot about them, then don't feel left out or in the dark, that's what the Essential Selection is here for.

Herbie Hancock - Rock It
Joey Beltram - Mentasm
Altern8 - Frequency
Alex Gopher - Dust
Federico Franchi - Cream (Franchi Alternative Mix)
Felix Da Housecat - Elvi$
Hostage - Rooted
The Proxy - Raven
Buy Now - Body Crash
Justice - Phantom Part II (Soulwax Remix)

It should also be noted that The Essential Selection will be replacing TFI Friday this week, so if your missing you're fix you'll have to check back next week for that. However we have a special treat planned for tomorrow and maybe even a few tricks, so come knocking on our door and see what we have in store.

Redial

Everyone knows that Daft Punk have an untouchable quality. It is a widely established fact that their productions are perhaps the hardest in the industry to rework or remix. This isn't because they use odd time signatures or sample to the extent that the original is barely recognisable. Oh no, instead, what it boils down to is that their productions are of such a high quality that it is borderline impossible to expand upon them or do them justice through a reinterpretation. Any time I see any form of Daft Punk remix, whether it is by an unknown or critically acclaimed producer, I go out of my way to get my hands on it and nearly every time I come away disappointed. In some respects, this makes me appreciate their talent even more because it really demonstrates that they're in a league of their own. While some could argue that Soulwax's remix of Robot Rock was an improvement on the original, I only partially agree. Soulwax did so little with the track, adding extra beats here and there that it almost entirely retained the originals feel, which is actually a testament to them because it remained one of the best and only worthwhile Daft Punk remixes out there, that is, until a certain Sydney-born producer exploded onto the scene.

When I was first introduced to Daft Punk - One More Time (Redial Goes To Hell Remix), I honestly didn't know what to think. I was both shocked and excited synchronously. It managed to encapsulate the original whilst bringing it to a level not before seen in dance music. The first question I asked was who the hell is this guy? The answer: A currently virtual unknown getting his name out there by not only doing justice to a Daft Punk track, but in many ways bettering it. A few years ago I would have considered such a prospect inconceivable but here was a guy who hit home with such deliverance that it was difficult not to like his style. From that point onwards, Redial featured in some shape or form in almost every mix we made, such was the impact of his productions.

Apparently we weren't the only one's who took a shine to him. Not only did he manage to play alongside the likes of Danger and D.I.M. within a short period of time, but he was also picked up by the record label Sweat It Out (home to the likes of Edu K, Yolanda Be Cool, DJ Funk, Gameboy/Gamegirl, Act Yo Age, G.L.O.V.E.S, Zombie Disco Squad etc) and has just completed a European tour and signed US touring exclusivity to promotion agency Noise Problem. There is little doubt that he is making serious progress in all the right places, releasing a healthy array of original productions and remixes on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong, he is not pulling a Crookers and releasing half-assed remixes every other week. Rather, he has been keeping it fresh yet consistent, the way it should be done. It is difficult to accurately describe his music. Like most electro artists, he has a flavour that is inextricably his own. If you know what to look for, a lot of the time you can spot his productions without any form of prompting. While his tracks are usually layered around a main synth-laden hook, it isn't always the archetypal electro synth that you would expect. Alternatively, he pays homage to music from the 1980s in a similar way that Kavinsky does. Though this homage is evident in many of his productions, he manages to remain both contemporary and relevant through his hardhitting buildups and conclusive breakdowns and that's what sets him apart.

I honestly don't think I could pick a favourite or standout track by him, as I adore the vast majority of his discocraphy, so I'll let you pick your own favourite.
